Arabic (Modern Standard): Level I

About this course
Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is an idiom that bridges the classical Arabic of literature and the Qur’an to spoken dialects. Native speakers can employ either their dialects or MSA. You’ll use phonetics and transcription to develop your pronunciation and speaking skills. Using texts, games, music, film and group activities, you’ll learn basic phrases for everyday exchanges. By the course’s end, you’ll be able to greet friends and business contacts and speak in simple terms about some familiar topics.

- Become familiar with the sounds of Modern Standard Arabic.
- Identify numbers and letters in the Arabic alphabet.
- Introduce yourself, in speech or in writing, and engage in basic conversation.

Modern Standard ArabicĀ Level I is offered in-class and online. See below for explanations about the mode of online delivery: “Virtual Classroom/In Real Time”
For the online sections, you need access to a reliable high-speed internet connection on your own computer or a public computer. Minimum speed: 280 Kb / sec. (= approx. 2.24 mb / sec.) You can verify your internet speed free at www.speedtest.net. With slower speeds, you may still be able to participate, but without a live video link. For the tutorials, a headset-microphone is needed for visual and audio link-up, or students may choose to participate in the tutorials by audio link-up only. You will receive information and support to log in to the course before it starts.
The information to allow access to the online sections is generated three business days after registration. Kindly register in time to start the course on the first day.
For SCS online courses, 100% of the tuition fee will be refunded if the withdrawal takes place within 10 business days following course start. No refund will be given after this deadline.
Online Section: Virtual Classroom/In Real Time
This innovative course provides the best of online and in-class learning. You join a class of at mostĀ 15 learners for a weekly class of two hours, live with your instructor. You meet online through our easy-to-use website. You can watch and listen to your instructor, ask questions and join your classmates for discussion, as in a classroom. You submit your assignments and get written feedback by email. You can replay the class for extra practice.
No textbook is required for this online section. All the material is made available online. The material covered will be the same as in Level I in-class. Students may continue their studies in-class or online in Level II. Levels III and above may be offered online at a later date.
